A Brief History...

Highgate Estate & Gardens is one of Greensboro's oldest and most beautiful architectural treasures. Construction began in 1810 by the owner, James H Nickelson, who had purchased the property from the University of Georgia. It consisted of only two rooms, one above the other. Today, the two rooms serve as the dining room on the first floor, and a bedroom above, still with the original smaller door and fireplace. In 1840, the Nickelson's added to the home, and it became a true southern manor. Mr. Nickelson owned and operated a profitable mill near the house, and was able to afford continual expansion.

During the Civil War, the property faced neglect and disrepair, and once the slaves were gone, there was no money for repairs. In 1888, with the house practically in ruins, the Nickelson's trustees sold the estate was sold to James and Carrie Armour. The Armours hired an architect to change the style from Georgian to the style of "La Belle Epoque", or French "Beautiful Era". In 1908 the property was again sold, this time to Colonel "Jimboy" James Davison,. an attorney and his wife Annie Dell. Colonel Davison had the misfortune to die in the infamous flu epidemic of 1921, and he wife sold the estate the the Mary Lella Mill, which was located behind the property. Today, this mill has been converted to luxury loft apartments. Highgate was purchased for the residence of The Lella Mill Manager, Mr. G.R. Brooks and his family. They resided there until April of 1946.

Mr. Ed Higdon and his wife Mary, purchased the estate later that year, and after Mr. Higdon's death, one of the five sons, Lonnie, purchased the house from the estate and lived there until 2001, when it was purchased by the present owners, Jack Rallo and Jeff Hough.

Jack Rallo and Jeff Hough have passionately cared for, restored, renovated and expanded Highgate Estate & Gardens with an endless stream of improvements aimed at efficiency, function and beauty. The award-winning gardens alone are spectacular, planned and developed by the owners to attract and nurture butterflies of a dizzying number of species. Among the significant additions to the property by the present owners, are the Stable Paviliion,(2009), with apprx 6500 sq ft of lounging and entertainment spaces, a full-service bar, caterer's kitchen and guest restrooms, The Groom's Cottage, a detached custom-built cottage (2018) overlooking the fabulous Magnolia terrace (2018), the Guest Cottage (2002), converted from the estate's detached car barn, standalone restroom building near the Chapel garden (2008), new windows with double-strength glass and blinds in the Main house (2018), new roof on main house (2012), veranda (2018), pavilion (2009-2017), new main house HVAC units 1st floor & 2nd floor (2017),
